A Trip Well Worth Its Salt

If you make it down to Uyuni, tucked down in Bolivia's south-western corner, there's probably one reason you're there – to see the incredible salt flats (the Salar de Uyuni). Funnily enough, that's also why we were in town.

Time to Recover in Sucre

If we were to hazard an intelligent guess, we'd say the incredibly cold overnight bus from La Paz to Sucre led to R writhing around the floor in pain the next day. A hostel visit from the English-speaking Bolivian doctor diagnosed lumbargo and it was clear that we wouldn't be going anywhere for the next week or doing the trekking we had planned.

(Not) the World's most Dangerous Road

If you've never done any mountain-biking, and especially not ridden a full-suspension mountainbike downhill on a gravel road, then I can understand how the Death Road could be quite scary. But apart from the 600m drop to the left, the ride itself is not really dangerous at all. As far as mountainbike tracks go, 3m is actually very wide, and while the total vertical decent is 3600m, the road mostly isn't even that steep. Unless you're doing something stupid, there's really only one thing that's dangerous: upcoming traffic that approaches you in one of the sharp bends.

The Longest 64km in my Life

"It's not as hard-core as the stuff I usually do," said R casually during one of the breaks on the Death Road. As someone who only pootles into town or does the odd bike ride to the Pfalz, I did not share the same sentiments.

A Taste of Home in La Paz

After an early morning boat trip from Puno across Lake Titicaca, a leaky rowing boat to the Bolivian border, and a long, hot bus ride from Copacobana, dirty, noisy, bustling La Paz felt like the last place we wanted to be. Throw in a decent night's sleep and a few exploration days, and we soon saw Bolivia's legislative capital with different eyes.
