Many of our friends familiar with German culture will know the short 18 minute black and white sketch that is aired every new year called “Dinner for One”. You'd probably be hard pressed to find a German who doesn't know the phrase made famous in the sketch - “same procedure as every year”.

We have a similar procedure every year in which we welcome in the new year with family or friends, sometimes in England (counting down to midnight with Jools Holland's Hootananny), or Germany with the obligatory Dinner for One viewing.

Little did we know one year ago that the end of 2014 would be a somewhat different procedure for us – celebrating the turn of the year here in Santiago de Chile, almost three months after saying goodbye to our jobs and apartment.

It was a tricky start to the year, with the big decision. Were we crazy to pack up everything and go? It had been the same procedure for years though – we'd talked about the travel and, like many people, there were the chats starting “wouldn't it be nice to...”. But it's one thing saying it, and another to put it into action. After a lot of pondering, chats with friends, colleagues, and family, we went for it! And boy are we glad we did.

We don't know what 2015 holds, but hopefully a lot more adventures, safe travel, meeting fabulous people along the way, and reuniting with our family and friends.

We wish everyone all the best for the year ahead, above all good health and happiness, and the courage to turn your dreams into reality.
